Caption: Chromite. This mineral is iron chromium oxide, and the only significant ore of chromium, a valuable strategic metal. Chromium deposits worldwide are not common, although chromium appears as an impurity in a large number of minerals. Chromite is always black and occurs both as sharp octahedral crystals and as granular masses (seen here). This specimen is from Mozambique, Africa, and measures 40 mm across.
