Caption: Braunite in barite. Braunite (grey) is a silicate mineral and a native oxide of manganese. It usually occurs as metallic dark grey tetragonal crystals (seen here). In this sample the braunite crystals rest on a substrate of barite (white). This specimen was found near Ilmenau, Germany, and measures 50 mm across.
