Caption: Tellurium in quartz. This metalloid element is rare in its pure, native state and is usually found as a compound in ores of go. It is used in specialised metallic alloys, chemical manufacture and electrical equipment. This sample shows fairly pure tellurium mixed with quartz. Found in the John Jay mine, near Boulder, Colorado, and measures 15 mm across.
