Caption: Magnetite crystals. Magnetite is an iron oxide (Fe3O4) that is one part wustite (FeO) and one part haematite (Fe2O3). Naturally occurring magnetite is the strongest magnetic mineral on Earth. The crystals in this sample are twinned (intergrown) octahedral crystals. Specimen from Banat, Hungary, and measures 70 mm across.
