Caption: Uranopilite in gummite. Uranopilite is a uranium-bearing mineral of minor importance as an ore of uranium. It usually forms bright yellow crusts within or on the surface of uranium bearing rocks of various types, such as the gummite in this sample. Gummite is an amorphous, varicoloured mixture of various uranium minerals, which are alteration products of the original uraninite that made up this rock. This sample is from Joachimsthal, Germany, and measures 55 mm across.
