Caption: Gadolinite crystals. Gadolinite is a complex silicate mineral including mutually variable amounts of cerium, lanthanum, neodymium, yttrium, beryllium, and iron. It generally occurs as opaque dark well-defined prismatic crystals with a vitreous to pitch like lustre and faint red to greenish hues. Gadolinite is a mineral of growing industrial importance because of its content of the rare earth metal yttrium. This specimen is from Hittero, Flekkenfjord, Norway, and measures 55 mm wide.
