Caption: Water scorpion fossil. Fossil of a Mesobelostomum sp. water scorpion, dating from the Late Jurassic period (around 155 to 145 million years ago). This was a large predatory insect that preyed on small fish and other water animals. It existed as a land type as well as a water type, both being capable of flight . This specimen is from Jurassic sediments at Solnhofen, Bavaria, Germany, and measures about 60 mm long.
