Caption: First Soviet rocket-powered aircraft. Diagram of the RP-318 aircraft designed by the Soviet test pilot, rocket engineer and spacecraft designer Sergei Pavlovich Korolev (1907-1966). This aircraft was built in 1936 and was originally designed to test an early rocket engine. However, after Korolev's arrest in 1938 is was developed further, and its first powered flight took place on 28th February 1940.
