Caption: Milky Way and Andean dawn. The glow at lower left is the first light of dawn over the Chajnantor Plateau, at an altitude of 5000 metres in the Chilean Andes. In the sky is the band of the Milky Way, our galaxy seen from the inside. Stars and constellations seen here include Alpha and Beta Centauri (near the horizon), the Southern Cross, the constellation Carina, and the bright star Canopus. The Large Magellanic Cloud is at upper right. The ice field in the foreground is a feature of high-altitude Andean plateaus known as ice penitentes.
