Caption: Moisey Markov (1908-94), Soviet physicist. Markov was a Soviet physicist and theorist who mostly worked in the area of quantum mechanics, nuclear physics and particle physics. He best known for proposing the idea of underwater neutrino telescopes in 1960. Markov was chairman of the Soviet Pugwash Committee - the Soviet branch of the Pugwash movement, an international organisation that promoted discussion between scholars and public figures to find ways of reducing the threat from the use of nuclear weapons.
