Caption: Sakhalin earthquake. Collapsed buildings and rubble left after an earthquake near the town of Neftegorsk, Sakhalin island, Russia. This earthquake, which measured 7.1, struck the island of Sakhalin, off the eastern coast of Russia, on the night of 27-28th May 1995. Although the epicentre was about 135 kilometres off Sakhalin's northern coast, it caused extensive damage. The town of Nevtegorsk was hit worst, with only 875 inhabitants surviving from a population of 3,200. Photographed on 1st June 1995.
