Caption: Earthquake rescue team. Swiss search and rescue worker and his dog searching amongst rubble for survivors of the 1988 earthquake in Armenia. The magnitude 6.9 event struck at 11.41 local time on 7th December 1988, with the epicentre at a depth of just 10 km below the town of Spitak. It caused devastation in the town, with over 25,000 deaths. Many scientists blame the poor construction of buildings made during the 'stagnation' era of Premier Brezhnev.
