Caption: Yuri Gagarin at a Pugwash conference. Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968) speaking in August 1961 at a Pugwash conference in Canada. Gagarin made the first manned space flight on 12th April 1961. He orbited the Earth once in the Vostok 1 spacecraft, a flight that lasted 1 hour and 48 minutes. The Pugwash movement was an international organisation that promoted discussion between scholars and public figures to find ways of reducing the threat from the use of nuclear weapons.
