Caption: Cerebellum tissue, light micrograph. This close-up of a section through a fold in the cerebellum shows the two layers making up its outer region (cortex) called grey matter. The outermost layer (centre) is the molecular layer. Below this is the granular layer (down left, across bottom, and at upper right). Below the grey matter is the white matter (darker pink, partially seen). Purkinje cells (dark blobs) are at the junction of the molecular and granular layer. The brain's cerebellum controls balance, posture and muscle coordination. This is a sample from a human brain. Magnification: x50 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
