Caption: Islet of Langerhans. Light micrograph of a section through an islet of Langerhans (centre left) in the pancreas. This structure is composed of clumps of secretory cells. The main secretions from these cells are the hormones glucagon and insulin, which control blood sugar. The cells surrounding the islet form sac-like structures called acini, and secrete digestive enzymes. The sample was prepared with haematoxylin eosin stain, and phase contrast illumination was used. Magnification: x200 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
