Each fat cell, or adipocyte, consists of a large central lipid droplet (green) surrounded by a thin layer of cytoplasm (brown), which contains the nucleus. Fat cells store energy as an insulating layer of fat under the skin. Magnification: x2000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
