Caption: Leukaemia blood cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of blood cells from a patient suffering from chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, a form of cancer. The disease results in an increase in circulating levels of abnormal white blood cells (lymphocytes, green) that display an unusual but characteristic pattern of molecules on the cell surface. This proliferation causes a reduction in red blood cells (erythrocytes, red) and other blood components. Magnification: x6000 when printed 10cm wide.
