Caption: Skin cell desmosomes. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through skin cells, showing numerous desmosomes (dark areas). Desmosomes are cell junctions formed from bundles of tonofilaments that extend between the cells. These interlocking filaments help the cells to resist shearing. Magnification: x25,000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
