Caption: Spinal cord. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through a spinal cord, showing the grey matter (centre, pink) and white matter (red). The spinal cord begins at the base of the brainstem, and extends down to the space between the first and second lumbar vertebrae. It consists of two distinct areas: grey matter, which contains the nerve cell bodies; and white matter, which contains the myelinated nerve fibres (axons). Magnification: x30 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
