Caption: Tarantula hair. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a hair from the abdomen of a tarantula (family Theraphosidae) spider. These hairs, known as urticating hairs, are flicked at other animals as a defense mechanism. The barbs mean they stick to their target, where they cause intense itching. Magnification: x1000 when printed 10cm wide.
