Caption: Early universe. Artwork showing the clumping of matter in stellar nurseries in the early universe. Stars form when gravitational accretion causes clumps of gas and dust (nebulae, yellow) to become dense enough to support nuclear fusion. Shockwaves from the birth and death of surrounding stars also aids the process. Two large stars are at upper left. The first stars formed around 100 million years after the origin of the universe (the Big Bang). Stars have continued to form and re-form in the billions of years that followed the formation of the first stars.
