Caption: Haematite, commonly called 'kidney ore', in its mamillated form. Haematite (iron oxide) varies in colour from metallic black to dull red. Haematite is a common and widely-distributed mineral occuring in igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. It is the most important ore of iron and has other industrial uses in paint manufacture and polishing compounds. This sample has been found in Morocco and has a size of approx. 40mm.
