Caption: Weighing air. Vacuum chamber containing air being weighed on a mass balance. After the mass of the combined air and vacuum chamber has been recorded, the air is evacuated from the chamber (with the gas syringe, lower right) and a new mass reading taken (see C011/9603). The difference is the weight of the evacuated air. Readings are also taken of the air pressure in the chamber at the start and end of the experiment (gauge at upper left). The volume of air evacuated (around 900 cubic centimetres) weighed 1.02 grams.
