Caption: Magnetised iron filings. These iron filings have been magnetised by one end of a bar magnet placed under paper. This forms a spiky pattern with the spikes following the magnetic field lines emerging from the magnet's pole. The magnetised filings align in these thin arcing lines due to the interactions between them, even though the magnetic field itself is continuous.
