Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Amikin tuberculosis (TB) drug being drawn into a syringe. This drug is used in combination with other drugs as the second-line treatment for TB. Second-line drugs are used when the bacteria have become resistant to, or the patient is unable to take, the first-line drugs. TB is cased by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which is spread by coughing and sneezing. It infects the lungs creating primary tubercles, nodular lesions of dead tissue and bacteria. The bacteria may enter the blood or lymph system and spread to other organs of the body.
