Caption: Mosquito larvae in water in a plant leaf (bract), using breathing tubes (siphons) at the end of their abdomens to breathe air. The head at the other end of each larva includes feeding brushes that filter food particles from the water. Mosquitoes are insects with a life cycle that includes a larval stage. The female of the adult winged form lays eggs in water that hatch into aquatic larvae that develop in stages to eventually emerge as a new adult winged form. In locations where there is no standing water on the ground, the eggs may be laid in water in cupped plant leaves, as here in a Heliconia bract. Photographed in Ecuador.
