Caption: Haloalkane test. Image 2 of 7. Adding dilute nitric acid to test tubes containing a haloalkane and sodium hydroxide. Haloalkanes are formed when a member of the halogen group of elements is substituted into an alkane. The alkane and sodium hydroxide solution have already been heated to remove the halogen from the alkane. Dilute nitric acid is added to purify the halogen by removing a hydroxyl group from it. This allows another reaction to be carried out, which will determine the halogen ion that was present in the haloalkane. For a sequence showing the test see images A500/537 to A500/543.
