Caption: Prehistoric elephants. Computer artwork of two prehistoric Deinotherium sp. proboscids on the plains of what is today Europe. These animals were a large relative of the modern-day elephant. They appeared in the Middle Miocene (around 16-12 million years ago) and continued until the Early Pleistocene period (around 2.6 -0.8 million years ago).
