Caption: Lagoon Nebula (M8, NGC 6523), infrared image. This emission nebula is 4100 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Sagittarius. This image was obtained with the IRAC and MIPS instruments on the Spitzer Space Telescope. Infrared radiation of increasing wavelength has been color-coded blue, green, and red. This view looks through the outer dust layers of the nebula to show the central regions, containing carbon-based dust grains (green) and warm dust (red). These gas and dust clouds are being sculpted by the intense glow of giant, young stars found within the nebula. Image published in 2011.
