Caption: Excavation of Atil. Aerial view of an archaeological site claimed to be the location of the city of Atil. Atil (or Itil) was the capital of the ancient region of Khazaria. This polyethnic, multifaith community flourished in the region of the Caucasus and parts of Ukraine and southern Russia in the 8th-11th centuries. The capital, Atil was located in the Volga Delta in the north-western corner of the Caspian Sea. Photographed in 2008.
