Caption: Gold extraction. View of a river bed that has been dug up in the search for gold. Deposits of gold in alluvial soils (known as placer gold) come from the erosion of rocks that bear gold ores. Historically this material has been retrieved by panning, but recently large scale surface mining has been performed. This photograph shows the Aldan River in Yukutia, north-eastern Russia.
