Caption: Siberian Ice Maiden. A reconstruction bust of a woman, thought to have lived in the fifth century BCE. Known as the Siberian Ice Maiden, the body was found in permafrost by an expedition on the Ukok Plateau in the Republic of Altai, formerly southern Siberia. She is thought to have belonged to the Pazyryk peoples, a group that inhabited the are from the 6th to 2nd centuries BCE. The reconstruction, based on the existing skull, proved controversial in that it has exclusively Caucasian features.
