This illustration shows gastroparesis (delayed gastric emptying), a condition of the stomach where there is partial paralysis (paresis) which results in food remaining in the stomach much longer than normal. Food is not crushed and propelled into the small intestine and normal digestion does not occur. The vagus nerve controls the peristalsis of the stomach. Gastroparesis is commonly caused by diabetes and is prone to bezoar formation, a indigestible concretion of food. Here, pancreatic cancer is shown as gastroparesis is sometimes associated with this cancer.
