Ileo-Anal Anastomosis

Ileo-Anal Anastomosis

Rights Managed

Ulcerative colitis lasting more than 10 years is associated with a high risk for colon cancer. Even after a total colectomy and ileo-anal anastomosis (connection of the small intestines with the anus), usually associated with the creation of a blind pouch, a small cuff of colon tissue remains that may become ulcerated and remains at high risk for colon cancer. Brushing for cytology (pap test) is useful.
