Caption: Solar activity and magnetic field lines seen by the Solar Dynamics Orbiter satellite. The magnetic fields of a pair of bright active regions are seen connected to each other over hundreds of thousands of kilometres. The hot plasma between them forms thin twisted strands that follow the magnetic field lines. Looping arcs of field lines can also be seen above each of the active regions, often the sources of solar storms. The footage was captured at a wavelength of 171 Angstroms (extreme ultraviolet), between 14th-16th March 2012.
