Caption: Pituitary gland. Light micrograph of a section through the brain showing the pituitary gland (bottom right), a hormone-secreting gland at the base of the brain. It is composed of two lobes, the anterior pituitary (red) and the posterior pituitary (purple and pale pink). At bottom right is the sphenoid bone. The anterior pituitary, under the influence of the hypothalamus (upper frame), secretes hormones that regulate physiological processes including growth, reproduction and stress. The posterior pituitary contains nerve fibres that secrete hormones synthesised by the hypothalamus into the blood stream. Magnification: x3 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
