Caption: Surgical scar. Light micrograph showing a section through skin with a surgical scar (top right). The surface of the skin, the epidermis (dark pink) is at top. Epidermal cells have proliferated to cover the edge of the wound. The surgeon cuts the skin in the same direction that the collagen fibres lie in the dermis (thick pink layer beneath the epidermis). Magnification: x4 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
