Skin section, light micrograph. The outer most layer of skin is the stratum corneum (red), it consists of dead cells that act as a protective barrier. Beneath this are the stratum lucidum (light pink), the stratum granulosm (thin purple line), the stratum spinosum (dark pink) and the stratum basale (purple). Next is the dermis (light pink), a thick layer of connective tissue. Beneath that is the hypodermis, which contains adipose (fat) cells (white circles). Magnification: x13 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
