Caption: Lactating breast tissue. Light micrograph of a section through mammary gland tissue from a lactating woman. Glandular tissue in the breast has proliferated to produce spaces (alveoli, white) through which milk (light purple) flows. The glands are arranged into lobules, which are divided by septa (pink). Each lobule drains into a lactiferous duct that opens to the surface of the nipple. The proportion of adipose (fatty) tissue (yellow) is much reduced in a lactating breast. Magnification: x13 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
