Caption: Close-up of partially dismantled focusing magnets of the DORIS II electron/positron storage ring at the DESY particle physics lab, Hamburg. (See description of A088/001 for details of DORIS.) The photograph shows in the foreground half (i. e. three of the poles) of a sextupole focusing magnet; behind it can be seen half of a quadrupole focusing magnet. These types of magnets are used to focus the bunches of electrons and positrons as they travel around the ring. The particle beam pipe (visible as the blocked-off white circle at top) travels between the poles of the magnets. (May 1984)
