Nassula protozoan. Differential interference contrast micrograph of a Nassula ornata ciliate protozoan, with ingested blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) enclosed in food vacuoles (coloured circles) inside. These protozoa are known as ciliates because they propel themselves through the water by beating tiny hair-like structures called cilia. Magnification: x180 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
