This nation lies in Melanesia in the South Pacific Ocean about 1,100 nautical miles (2,000 km) northeast of New Zealand's North Island. The country comprises an archipelago of more than 332 islands, of which 110 are permanently inhabited, and more than 500 islets. The two main islands are Viti Levu (left) and Vanua Levu (upper centre). Image compiled from data acquired by the LANDSAT 5 and 7 satellites, in 2000.
