Caption: CT scanning of dolphin skull. Researcher studying a dolphin skull (centre) using the newly installed computed tomography (CT) scanner at the French National Museum of Natural History (MNHN), Paris, France. Called the AST-RX (X-Ray Tomography Scientific Access Platform), this high-performance scanner cost over 800,000 euros. Designed for non-invasive scanning and 3D modelling of fossil and biological specimens, it allows the microscopic imaging of internal anatomical structures that could not otherwise be studied without destroying the specimens. It was inaugurated in September 2011. Photographed in May 2011.
