Caption: Gangrene of the foot. Dead tissue (black) on a patient's foot caused by polyarteritis nodosa (PAN). PAN is a disease in which the arteries are attacked by the immune system and become swollen and damaged. This leads to a lack of oxygen being delivered to tissues, eventually leading to necrosis (tissue death). The cause of PAN is not known. Treatment is with immunosuppressants.
