Caption: Electric batteries. Two early electric batteries connected in series to form a battery pack used to provide electrical power. The first battery was developed by Volta in 1800. Batteries are devices from which electricity is used to power an electrical device. The chemicals inside them (liquids in the case of wet batteries) react when placed in a circuit, producing electricity. Artwork from the third volume (first period of 1889) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
