Caption: Imipenem-cilastatin molecular model, one of the carbapenem family of antibiotics that represent a last resort in the treatment of resistant bacterial infections, sometimes called superbugs. However, bacteria possessing genes such as NDM-1 are able to produce an enzyme which can hydrolyze these antibiotics and render them ineffective. Carbon=black, hydrogen=white, oxygen=red, nitrogen=blue, and sulfur=yellow.
