Caption: Illustration of a section of bacteria possessing the New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase (NDM-1) gene referred to as a Superbug. The NDM-1 gene is not part of the bacteria genome but lies on plastids which are DNA remnants floating in the cytoplasm. The NDM-1 gene enables production of the NDM-1 enzyme which makes the bacteria resistant to a broad range of antibiotics including those of the carbapenem family. NDM-1 is a carbapenemase beta-lactamase - an enzyme that hydrolyzes and inactivates carbapenems such as imipenem-cilastatin shown here in molecular form. Labeled.
