Crosssection of an alveolus in the lung, capillaries surround the alveolus. Oxygen moves into the blood stream and carbon dioxide moves out of the blood stream. Surfactant components are synthesized in the Type II cell resulting in phospholipids that provide material for a monolayer at the air-liquid interface in the alveolus, which lowers surface tension.
