Caption: Finn Malmgren (1895-1928), Swedish meteorologist and Arctic explorer. Malmgren was the meteorologist on the Arctic airship 'Italia' expedition led by Italian engineer and explorer Umberto Nobile. The crew of 16 flew over the North Pole, but while still in the Arctic crashed in a storm on 25 May 1928. One person died in the crash and six were lost with the remains of the airship which rose back into the air. Malmgren blamed himself for the accident. He and two others attempted to trek to safety, but Malmgren died of exposure during the attempt. All the other survivors were eventually rescued. Photographed in 1928.
