Caption: Journalist and Arctic explorer Vize. Soviet Arctic explorer Vladimir Yulyevich Vize (1886-1954) talking to a German journalist on board the icebreaker Malygin in Arkhangelsk, Russia, in 1931, before starting on an expedition. The expedition, led by Vize, departed in July 1931, and travelled to Franz Josef Land, an archipelago located high in the Arctic. Vize (also known by the German form of his name: Vladimir Wiese) was a specialist in polar oceanography, and a member of the Soviet Arctic Institute. He participated in several Arctic expeditions between 1912 and 1940. The 'Professor Vize' research ship was named in his honour.
